At the end of last summer I started getting sick, really sick. I knew something was wrong, but couldn't put my finger on what it was. I kept thinking I was just stressed ( true) that I was working too much ( also true) and that I wasn't eating well ( true again). Wonder how many of us Women Entrepreneurs struggle with the same issues?
I started changing my eating habits and paying attention to my body more. Unfortunately, as the summer turned to fall my symptoms continued to get worse and weirder yet. My hands and feet were tingling almost all the time, Migraine level headaches were more and more common and my energy was at an all time low. I headed straight to bed almost every night after coming home. The scariest part was my mind- I felt like I was loosing it. Forgetting almost everything ( including the correct words for sentences) and barely able to function in business settings. Months went on with my health declining. 6, 8 then 10 doctor visits and blood tests-Labels Like MS, Chronic Fatigue, Lupus and similar were thrown around. There were times that I thought I was dying- Sounds dramatic, but after talking with my husband  he confirmed feeling the same way.

I continued to soldier through life trying to function, but inside I was terrified. I knew the time was coming to surrender my life as I previously knew it.
Just at my point of surrender- There was a miraculous turn of events and I started getting treatment for Mercury Poisoning.( By fellow WE member Chris Anne McDonald)  I started treatment in December and have been on the amazing if somewhat bumpy road to restored health ever since. In so many ways this journey through illness and coming back into health has changed me for the better. I am so much more grateful for all that life offers. I have a renewed passion for my business, love my family better and care a whole lot less about what other people think.

Why am I sharing this and what does it have to do with being the Co-Director of Women Entrepreneurs of Alaska? I decided to share this because through this process I made two huge mistakes. Mistakes I hope that I can help others avoid by sharing this.
My mistakes were: I didn't share what was really happening and I didn't ask for help. I continued to put on my "business face" to the best of my ability and gave myself very little grace to just be sick.

It's not normally talked about is successful business books or even with each other in meetings, but what do you do if there's a life event that is seriously affecting your ability to function? My advice today is forthright honesty to the best of your ability. We all need help from time to time- Now is a good time to ask for some :)
For one thing- I've since learned that others noticed I was different, but didn't know why. Some even took it personally. Lack of information leaves a vacuum that must be filled. There's no guarantee that others will respond the way you want them to, but holding back the truth doesn't give them the opportunity either.

In my case, people in my personal and business life were left out of the process. That's the second part of the lesson I learned- that to honestly share in each others journey ( both the  good and bad ) allows both parties to learn and grow. How do we learn to navigate the challenges of business and personal if we don't see it honestly modeled in each others lives?

Thanks for letting me share and I hope it gives space in your lives to open up and ask for help where needed.
Jen and my vision for the Women Entrepreneurs of Alaska is to provide a place of growth, encouragement, networking and education. It's so much more fun to know we are on the road together and supportive of each others growth in business and beyond!

    Best,

    Jennifer Christensen

    Hello Enterprizing Women!

I am the new member and very blessed to be a part of this amazing group of Women, thanks to Jennifer Stephans!  Just a few days ago, Jennifer and I attended a Celebration of Life for our Beloved Friend, Cathy Powell who recently died in Prince William Sound on August 13th.  Jennifer knew her for 15 wonderful years, while I only knew her for a short time.  During this short time was pivitol; she inspired me to pursue my passions and not hold back!  I wanted to be more like her, to truly live life to the fullest and spend quality time with my family & friends and to really love what I do!  Cathy was all about that...Jennifer can vouch for this!

Just the day before attending the Celebration of Life for Cathy, last Monday, August 20th.  I was seriously questioning my career path, and the future of living out my own life to the fullest.  I was not expecting it, but Jennifer invited me to come to WE of A and I knew then that this was good!  Once I met all of YOU beautiful women I knew that my dear friend Cathy was probably smiling down upon me/us!  Thank you Jennifer! Looking forward to using your expertise/skills to improve our home business organization!

My new home business with Isagenix International, is exciting!  I recently learned that it is nearly a 2 Billion dollars Company!  Tonight I watched the Isavideo from my website on Enterprizing Women, and thought of YOU.  Please take the time to watch and feel free to check out my website at www.alaskabecky.isagenix.com once there click on the top menu tab ISAVIDEOS & select Enterprizing Women it is really incrediable!  There is much more to view and I am happy to serve you and certainly excited to network with all of you to support and encourage one another...what FUN we shall have as TEAM PLAYERS!

Hope to see you for Monday Mingle at Sweet 100, it shall be SWEET  :-)

My guest is my new dear friend/budsiness partner, Paris Kinmon.  She has been with the business for 5 years & has great knowledge about the business & company.  I am learning!  She is readily able to help me and is a real blessing to work with!

In a nutshell, Isagenix has given me renewed energy, loss of cravings for the junk and my recent weight loss of 9 Inches in 9 days! It WORKS!

It's been a wonderful few months for Women Entrepreneurs of Alaska. Even with the summer months taking many of us out of state or atleast enjoying the outdoors- Our membership has been growing by leaps and bounds. Both Jennifer and I are so pleased with the direction of the group and all the support we see being given to each other in helping to grow our business.
We just wanted to take  moment to say thank you! Thank you for your increased participation and making this group better and better. Here's to enjoying the rest of our summer and growing our businesses at the same time!

    Cheers and Success,

Talking with Janna from Photo Arts by Janna confirmed everything I have seen from viewing her work.
Her work and Janna herself really reflect her by-line: elegant, classic, art. One of our WE of Alaska members had shown me her gorgeous boudoir shots Janna had recently taken.
They were truly breathtaking and elegant at the same time. It made me actually consider having them done...
Janna has been working in the industry for over 25 years. She took some time off in between to raise her children, but has been dedicated to making  a living with her photography for the past 15 years.
When I asked her what she loved the most about her work she said the variety and meeting and working with new people. Every day is different and interesting. Every day brings something new and fresh for her to creatively work with.
She said the most challenging part of the her work is "working" the business itself. I think for all of us that are lucky enough to be working in the field and area that we are passionate about- that part of the job can be challenging.
Photo Arts by Janna is our WE of Alaska member of the week because her business reflects so many of the ideals that make up our  group. Janna is living her passion with her business. She has established a successful niche within our community and she makes women look and feel beautiful! Thanks Janna for being a wonderful member of WE of Alaska!

WE of Alaska is excited to announce Linda from Terra Bella as our member of the week. Terra Bella is such a fantastic part of the community in Anchorage. Linda's purpose and goals of Terra Bella are much larger than the coffee shop itself.  She serves as a central retail location for many products from organic and gluten free foods to art and fair trade crafts.
Walking into Terra Bella's location on Dimond is always warm, inviting and yet stimulating at the same time. Whether it's the great art work on the walls or the extensive variety of warm bread, soup and other wonderful smells that emulate from Terra Bella  your senses are stimulated and yet not overwhelmed.
Every time I go there, it's like meeting with a friend you've had for years, but haven't seen for a while and can't wait to catch up on all the new things in her life. Terra Bella has a continuous flow of new artwork, new events that Linda is partnering with and great new specials to try.
Terra Bella began with her drive through location in midtown. Even in the beginning, Linda had a vision for Terra Bella to meet a certain niche with providing Organic Coffee. She uses Alaska Roasted coffee from Homer Alaska and has become well known as the best place in Anchorage to buy gluten free treats that taste great.
When I spoke with Linda about her challenges, successes and best part of  being in business for yourself- The answer to these questions was the same: People.  Linda spoke about the ability to learn and grow from the people around her. Whether it's the 16 year old employee with wisdom beyond their years, or the customer that Linda has gotten to know and become friends with- that has been the greatest joy and measure of success for Linda in owning Terra Bella.
We of Alaska is proud to have Linda with Terra Bella as the member of the week. It's clear that Linda is accomplishing her goal of making the world a little better place, one person at a time. Thanks for caring about people Linda. They clearly care about you too!

Most people have a similar experience when they meet Sara Wright from Organizing to Inspire for the first time. Her sweet smile and willingness to laugh make you feel instantly comfortable. After a few minutes of conversation you feel relaxed and start opening up about the areas that you are overwhelmed. Before you know it, the idea of her coming to your home or office and sorting through the unimaginable layers of disorganized mess doesn't seem so intimidating.
It's impossible to separate Sara from her business because they are really a reflection of each other. A willingness to help and wade into the mess of others, at the same time seeing the potential and best in each situation takes a certain personality. Sara has it in abundance!
Organizing to Inspire is perfectly named because she offers everything from consulting, mentorship, encouragement to actual organizing work itself. What ever capacity she is working in she inspires her clients to care enough for themselves to make organizing their time, space and work area valuable.
Organizing to Inspire is our WE member of the week because Sara has inspired so many of us to be better Women Entrepreneurs!
